FAQ

Who is this web site for?

It's for devotees who live in or near one of the 350 locations listed in the dropdown box above and who want information about observing Gaudiya Vaisnava occasions and festivals in their area.

I have always used the VCal computer program for that. Why should I use this site?

VCal was written in a computer programming language that is now out of date. The program only runs on the MS-DOS platform, thus limiting both expandability and usability, and it needs to be phased out. This site is the first step in bringing our calendar calculation system to a modern standard. At the same time we have made some needed adjustments to the VCal 4.01 calculations to incorporate recent research by the GBC Vaisnava Calendar Committee. You will find a detailed list of the calculation adjustments below. A few minor program glitches have also been sorted out.

I don't find my city listed above. What should I do?

If you live near one of the cities listed, then you can use that other city's calendar. If not, then you can write to vcal@iskcongbc.org and we will try to include it. Please be sure to include your latitude, longitude and time zone information. You may instead want to download and use the VCal 4.01  program until such time as we have enabled the calculation for your city.

Why do you only have a limited number of years available for each location?

This site is just a first step. We hope to make a new version that can calculate for any year and any location very soon.

How can I find out when to celebrate my spiritual master's appearance day?

This is a common question, and an important reason why the vaisnava community needs a new, more flexible computer program. This capability will be implemented in the next phase. In the meantime you can send an email to vcal@iskcongbc.org

Detailed list of VCal 4.01 calculation rules that are adjusted in the calendars produced by this site:

Glossary:

Tithi -- A lunar day, the time period during which the angle between the sun and the moon changes by an increment of 12 degrees.

Ksaya -- Said of a tithi that does not intersect with a sunrise.

Vriddhi -- Said of a tithi that intersects with two consecutive sunrises.

  1. When a tithi is ksaya, the general rule, based on our current research, is that an observance scheduled for that tithi should be celebrated on the solar day which has its sunrise just after that tithi ends. VCal 4.01 calculates such an observance to occur on the solar day which has its sunrise just before that tithi begins.
  2. When a tithi is vriddhi, the general rule, again based on our current research, is that an observance scheduled for that tithi should be celebrated on the first of the two solar days. VCal 4.01 sometimes calculates such an observance for the second of the two solar days.
  3. Gundica Marjana should always be celebrated the day before Ratha Yatra. VCal 4.01 calculates it according to tithi.
  4. The Festival of Jagannath Misra should always be celebrated the day after Gaura Purnima is celebrated. VCal 4.01 calculates it always for the Krishna Pratipat of Visnu Masa, but this is not correct if the Purnima tithi is vriddhi. To allow for such an eventuality, this site now shows the entry for this occasion placed together with Gaura Purnima at the end of the year instead of at the beginning of the following year.
  5. Ganga Sagara Mela always occurs on the day of Makara Sankranti. VCal 4.01 calculates it according to tithi.

In addition to these adjustments, we have also made numerous minor wording changes to improve readability and avoid the possibility of confusion. Most notable among the wording-only changes is the way in which Ekadasi fasting days are described. When VCal 4.01 calculates that a day is suitable for Ekadasi fasting, the printout shows either "Suddha Ekadasi" or "<some type of> Mahadvadasi". Actually, such a day may be either an Ekadasi or a Dvadasi, and from the printout term used it is not obvious which one it is. To avoid any confusion, the calendars produced by this site specify whether the day is an Ekadasi or a Dvadasi.

(Please note that this site makes no adjustments to the observances calculated in VCal 4.01 for Ekadasi fasts, Janmastami, and Govardhana Puja, since they are accurate. The points above result in actual observance days shifting to one day later or one day earlier less than 5% of the time.)
